Fly of the Month: August 2016

Low water, hot sun, wet wading, and cold beer. This is a great time of year to be fly fishing. Although it can sometimes be difficult, a well-placed hopper against a grassy bank can result in a vicious grab from an 18-inch brown trout. Persistence is the name of the game right now. Keep your fly in productive zones for as long as possible. Cast after cast. Tight to the bank. You have to make it as easy as possible for the trout to grab your bug. Act like a ninja. Move slowly, quietly, and deliberately. Make extremely long drifts. If you do this long enough and stay laser focused, you can potentially hook your biggest trout of the season. It’s truly one of my favorite things to do in Michigan. There is nothing better than cracking a cold beer after netting a huge trout in the midday sun. Cheers!
