Pack Your Fly Rods For Cancun

tarpon

For years I have been traveling to Cancun. But I never knew, even though Cancun is surrounded by water, that it had such great fishing. It was on a recent trip that I spotted those little skiffs with poling and casting platforms.

Well, I had to give it a try. We went in and starting casting in the mangroves. All around it was beautiful. There were flocks of flamingoes, cranes and herons. Just that alone was worth it. Until the guide shouted, “There they are!” Tarpon! I was using a type of ducktail, a Mickey Finn. I was stripping it fast like a streamer and stopped when the fish made a move.

Strip-set, strip-set, strip-set and Boom! That baby came out of the water.

We spent three days doing this, catching tarpon after tarpon. But they say there are bonefish. There are permit, literally hundreds of permit, and snook and big sea bass.

Now, one thing you might want to know is the permit are like 20 pounds or bigger. They are monsters in this area, getting up to 42 pounds. The tarpon are from 5 pounds to 50 pounds, but there are not a lot of 50s. Most are 25 to 30 pounds. The are big sea trout, from 6 to 10 pounds. And the snook get up to 20 pounds.

The point is, if you are going to Cancun, pack your rods. Or if you don’t have rods they will take care of you here.

Don’t forget to write us on our website www.ASOBonline.com. I’ll get back to you, and we’ll go fishing.

Until the next adventure!
