Fort Bayou Fishing Forecast: May 2013

The fish population for the most part was not hurt during April, with the wind, rain and cold fronts…bad was used more than good when describing the weather.  Hopefully May will be the month mother nature clams down.  With calm seas and bright sun comes waves of triple tail providing the best in sight-fishing fun.  Early in the month look for these peculiar looking fish to come from the east, working their way through the MS Sound.  Triple tail can be found around any floating or fixed object that cast shade.  When targeting triple tail I prefer a spinning rod with 40 pound power pro as a main line attached to a 30 pound fluorocarbon leader.  Bait a 3-4/0 Gamakatsu live bait hook with live either large live shrimp or pinfish.  May should be the month that speckled trout start swarming the grass beds around the barrier islands.  A thunder cork with 30 inches of 15 pound fluorocarbon drifting across the submerged vegetation with live shrimp or matrix shad in green hornet color will produce some head shaking action.  Anyone looking near shore can find speckled trout and the smaller white trout around the many man made reefs from Katrina Key to Pass Christian.  There are numerous rubble piles marked by white poles starting in the Pass and stretching to the old Broadwater Marina. Generally the specks can be caught in low light conditions with white trout biting at any time of the day.

Charts for man made reefs can be found online or at the DMR office on Bayview Ave in Biloxi.
