Fort Bayou Forecast: April 2014

fortbayou-fishing-report
[dropcap]F[/dropcap]ort Bayou Charters is looking forward to April for many reasons. The main ingredient for better fishing comes in the form of warmer temps and calm seas. The elusive spotted seatrout should be making their way offshore to the barrier islands and other springtime feeding areas. A safe bet for speck anglers is Katrina Reef on the south-east side of Deer Island along with the rock jetties on the west end of Deer. The best time for locating trout at the barrier islands is mid to late April. The grass beds on Ship, Horn and Cat Islands will be home to large female trout throughout April and into June. Some of the best results can be found using the Odd Ball Tackle cork with a live shrimp or croaker fished below the surface. The Odd Ball Tackle cork allows for longer casts which covers more water and makes a stealthy approach.

April brings the much anticipated arrival of the tasty white trout and ground mullet to our many inshore reefs. When fishing for these species, try the White House Reef located around West Biloxi about a mile or so offshore. Also Keesler Reef on the south-west side of Deer Island is a fertile ground as well. Early April will be prime for big sheepshead around any barnacle laden structure between the beach and the barrier islands.
