Freshwater Fishing Forecast: April 2013

By now the bass spawn is in full swing with the last wave showing up in April. During the first weeks of April I look for dead end pockets and bayous with little to no runoff from rain. This scenario keeps the worse thing from happening, dirty and cold water from running the bass off the beds. When the water clarity and bottom material hampers sight fishing, I employ fast moving baits to trigger bass to go on the defense. Usually these baits will not catch the bass, but instead reveal the location of the bed. Here are a few lures that will help in locating fish, a floating Jerkbait like the Rattlin Rogue and a Rapala is one of my favorite spring baits. Try a buzzbait reeled slow when the water temps reach the low to mid 60’s. Another good choice especially in heavy vegetation is a Skinny Dipper made by Reaction Innovations, this bait is soft and allows for a weedless presentation. If these lures don’t result in a hook-up then pick up a Texas rigged Zoom Speed Vibe and fan cast to the area where the strike occurred.

The month of April can be fantastic for numbers of bass caught so try to introduce a child to the sport, they may trade their video games for fishing poles and a tackle box! Be patient and make it simple that first bass leaping into the air may change a child forever. I still remember my first one caught on a Tequila Sunrise 6” worm using a Zebco 33 with my dad at my side coaching me all the way. The world changes but time spent in the outdoors with your kids is still as simple as it was in years past, bringing the same results.

God Bless and stay safe on the water…remember a life jacket can only work if you’re wearing it when you need it.
