Bass fishing in June should be some of the best all year. Most bass along the coastal rivers will be moving towards the deeper bayous, rivers and dead lakes. The spawning has stopped and the water temps have not risen to a uncomfortable level yet. This is when the bass start feeding in a more predictable manner.
With the emergence of thick vegetation and bright sun that usually accompanies the month of June, I use a couple of different lures in both the marsh and the trees. A hollow belly frog and a fluke-type bait with weedless rigging can be used throughout the river systems. The frog is great for sliding across the thick mats of vegetation along the main river marsh. North along the trees this bait can be skipped under overhangs with little practice. Also, don’t pass up any groups of lilly pads along the way.
I fish with two colors when frog fishing: black and one that resembles the colors on a bluegill with some brown and dark green mixed in. If the topwater bite doesn’t seem to be working, I switch to the fluke and work below the surface, slowly twitching with pauses in between. I also use the fluke as a backup to missed strikes from fishing the frog, and always have the frog ready to cast.
Get ready, because the topwater action that comes with frog fishing can be the most exciting bass bait you will use.
