Freshwater Fishing Report: Feb 2014

Muddy, cold water everywhere a bass can be found, makes a tough winter an understatement for South Mississippi bass anglers. The weather has affected every river along the coast causing tournament weights to be below average. Fishing for plump winter bass in February can be rewarding. For bass this is the month they will be at their heaviest before spawning, which may start later in the month and run through April. These fat fish can be found in deeper water waiting on a warming trend to ease into spawning flats. With the water being stained or muddy locating wood on main river ledges will be key in landing more bass. Visual wood, whether natural or man, made can be a start. This cover is usually fished frequently, but can still be productive. Wood in the form of stumps and laydowns that are submerged out of view may hold the “Honey Hole”of a lifetime. No better way of locating treasure spots than having a good side imaging unit from Humminbird. Using your electronics to scan the ledges in February will pay off big.
