Cayo Costa State Park is Florida’s largest undisturbed barrier island. Travel by boat to enjoy miles of Cayo Costa’s white sand beaches. Go shelling, swimming, camping, biking, kayaking and hiking in a peaceful setting. The Friends of Cayo Costa invite you to join us in our mission to see this beauty maintained and enjoyed by many, for generations to come. Cayo Costa (Spanish for ‘small coastal island’) is an island gem that takes you back to the Florida of 100 years ago. Encompassing more than 2,400 acres on Florida’s Gulf Coast, Cayo Costa Island features nine miles of white sand beaches, pine forests, oak-palm hammocks, birds, wild flowers and outstanding fishing and a camp store. This barrier island park is a Gulf Coast paradise accessible only by private boat or tour boat. Visitors may see manatees and pods of dolphins in the waters around the 2,426 acre park as well as a spectacular assortment of birds. The nature trails that crisscross the island provide opportunities for hiking and off-road bicycling. Saltwater anglers can fish from their boats or throw a line out into the surf. The entrance fee is $2.00 per person (children 6 and under are free). (The camp store is on the bay side of the island.)
The Friends group has been formed to raise awareness of the island’s natural history and recreational opportunities. Although FL State Parks operations are about 70% self-sustaining, they still receive some tax dollars. FoCC’s Friends dues support fundraising events and activities to enhance the park’s operation. A long range goal of the Friends of Cayo Costa State Park is to construct a heritage and nature center. You can help by becoming a Boater Friend. If you visit the beach side of Cayo Costa, make the trek to the bayside of the park on foot or by boat. Tie up at the dock and visit the Camp Store (did you know there was one?!) and become a Boater Friend Of Cayo Costa! The ship’s store carries sunscreen, insect repellant, snacks, ice, and even ice cream to enjoy on a hot day.
