We’re full on into the fall fishing season and the sailfish are starting to snap. Already we are catching multiple sails per week and as the temperatures slowly cool down, sailfish will bite even better. Sailfish are the most sought after game fish in the ocean and for good reason. They are a top gamefish species, very large in size, they require good angling skills to catch and they put up the most awesome spectacles of jumping and dancing on the top of the water, more so than any other fish. They truly are the ultimate gamefish. We are now into the beginning of sailfish season and they have started off as they usually do with a strong bite. Sailfishing will continue to be very good throughout the fall and winter months. You can catch sailfish a number of ways, but the most effective and my personal favorite is kite fishing. When kite fishing, we fly kites, which we use to suspend live baits down to the surface of the water so that the baits are splashing on the top. It is a great technique to catch sailfish, tuna, mahi mahi, sharks and any other top water gamefish. With the steady October winds, this is a great month to go kite fishing for sails.

Offshore, dolphin fishing has improved immensely. For an effective dolphin fishing trip you have to be committed and go way offshore. The dolphin are showing up 20 to 25 miles offshore, halfway to Bimini. Inside of 20 miles, the offshore territory is like a barren desert, but if you spend some time trolling 20 to 25 miles offshore, you should find some dolphin. If you can find anything floating out there like a refrigerator, pallet or a big log of bamboo, you’ll load the box with dolphin, and maybe a wahoo too. Don’t forget to fish a deep line when fishing offshore. Incorporate either a planer or a deep trolling lead in your spread to get a bait down in the water column. Wahoo love that deep bait.

We’re getting some good fish out of Fort Lauderdale this month. Tight lines everybody.
