Grand Haven Fishing Report: August 2014

Fishing here in the Grand Haven area has been challenging but some nice fish have been taken. Steelheads in the 9 to 14 pound class have made up a good portion of our catch. If you look closely at this month’s photo you’ll notice there’s a yellow lab trying to catch up to the leaping steelhead in the forefront of the picture. Some guys (my son) will pull out all the stops to land a fish when it’s slow.

Kings up to 20 pounds have also begun to show up at the cleaning station as the mature kings have begun to school up a bit. The continued cool and rainy weather has made trying to pattern the fish a nightmare this season but the salmons urge to return to its birthplace assures that at least a few fish will follow the rules and fishing should continue to improve.
If you’re headed this way in August you’ll want to call ahead to local tackle shops to get the latest info.

As the water warms up, plan on picking up a couple of meat rigs and have your wire diver rods ready to go. Glow plugs should begin working well in the pre-dawn hours on copper rigs set to ride about 10′ above the thermocline as well as in the colder water below. A slow troll from 1.8 – 2.4 mph often makes your baits irresistible to a big king looking for breakfast.
