Grand River Fishing Report: December 2014

Grand River Fishing Report

December, some of the best days to fish the river are here! The steelhead are in thick, and it’s time to find the deep-wintering holes. Running floats and jigs and wax worms are the key. My favorite jig to run this time of year is a 1/16 oz white jig. Using 4-pound test as leader and 8-to-10 pound main line. Go lite. The water is getting clear, and they have been beat up all fall.

When I say deep wintering-holes I’m not talking about a 20-foot hole. Look for anything that has a cut out. Even if it’s a foot change on the bottom to a 5-foot drop off. Find them, fish them, and you will find fish. Bouncing small spawn bags are a good go to. The smaller the bags, the better. Three-to-four egg bags in white, pink, and chartreuse are good. Again use 4-pound leader and a small split shot, just bouncing the bottom and drifting the cuts.

The walleye in the Grand are in as well. In the afternoon throw body baits and work them slow. The water is colder, so the fish are not as active, but they are still feeding. Don’t forget about the buck tail jigs. Quarter ounce is a good go to as well as the three inch white twister tails. Have a good Christmas, take care and good luck fishing!
