W inter fishing on the Grand River and its tributaries can be good for steelhead if the weather permits. With the weather that we are having now we should have some decent fishing throughout the winter into spring. Although the steelhead numbers seem to be down on the Grand so far this fall, there are still fish around to be had. They are scattered all the way up to Lansing just not in the numbers that we are used to seeing. With the warmer than average weather the fish have been moving more than usual for this time of year, lots of fish that would have held below 6th Street have moved upstream.
The Grand River can freeze up or run slush when you have really cold weather so keep that in mind. The 6th Street Dam area can fish well into the winter months as long as there are a good number of fish there. By the time January hits most of the fish have seen every bait around so try switching through different baits until you find out what they want. The Rogue River is another option that can be good during January, try fishing jigs and waxworms through the slower pools and you should be rewarded. Remember to be careful if you plan on venturing out on the water, the winter months are not the time for a swim
