Grand River Fishing Report: May 2014

G rand Rapids is the palce to be for the month of May. At this time of year you can pretty much fish anywhere in the Grand River and hook fish. With the cold weather we have had it has prolonged the breeding steelhead and wallere. For steelhead, anglers are running spawn and floats to keep their bag off the bottom so they don’t hook as many suckers. Throwing wobble glows is good to use as well. With walleye, anglers want to slow troll body baits and hot-n-tots up river and then vertical jig a jig tipped with a minnow or a twister tail. Throwing bucktail jigs will land you some fish as well.

The run of black and white crappie are making their way up the Grand. Fish brush piles and rock piles to catch the big slabs. The Grand River has many buoys that offer tremendous fishing opportunities. Throwing small twister tails and beetle spins will get hook ups for you. The bluegill are making their way up the river as well. Use leaf and wax worms right off the bottom or under a float in the slack water. You can catch a nice stringer of pan fish if you fish for them.

The pike are hot. Target the tributaries entering the Grand River using live suckers under a float, big body baits, or spinner baits. There are a large number of pike in the river. The channel catfish are biting as well. Use cut bait, crawlers, or stink bait right off the bottom. I like to use a 2 to 3 ounce no roll sinker with a bead and at least a 1/0 hook. The flathead catfish are turning on. Use live suckers or fresh cut bait in front of brush piles to target these fish. Small mouth bass are going to be hitting really well towards the end of May. Use chartreuse and blue shallow running crank baits, small spinner baits, or even crawlers or soft crawls.
