Grand River Fishing Report: Sept. 2014

The fall colors are coming and for me, this is my favorite time of year. This month, we will see coho’s and kings as well as some steelhead. We should get a nice run in downtown Grand Rapids. It’s been a cooler summer this year, and a lot of fish are going to be coming into the tribs earlier than we have seen in the past. For the coho’s, I like to use small pink flies, beads, spawn, and a half of crawler. One thing about the Grand River, there are so many runs in the river and many methods to catch them. I thought I would share of few methods with you. You learn them, and you will out fish your buddies!

The CHUCK-n-DUCK rig is going to be one of your most popular ways to catch them. That’s when you have a heavier main line. I like 12 to 14 pound test. And a lighter leader line I like 4 to 8 pound maxima line ultra. I have a bait and tackle store, but I’m not going to spend the $20 on a spool of line. When you’re not catching fish, use lighter line. Don’t think you can throw 20 pound test on and expect the fish not to see it. Fish a clear river and watch the fish swim right around your line. I’ve seen it.

FLOAT FISHING is one method I prefer to fish and why it’s BOBBER DOWN SON! Set the hook and cross his eyes and FISH ON! With float fishing your cutting a lot of the guessing game out. You know right where your float is, and you know how deep you’re running. And when you can target those current breaks and the feeding channels you are going to catch more fish!

FLY FISH, Switch, or Spey Em. Using a weight-forward line or a sink tip with a perfect cast, no matter if you get a nice roll cast, double haul or a Snap T. When you get it to where you want it, it always puts a smile on your face. Catching a fish on the swing is awesome. Throw it in a hole and a fall-run steelhead smacks it and starts jumping nonstop on you…if you haven’t tried it…you are missing out.

Every year BACK BOUNCE is becoming more and more popular. The idea is to run it like a chuck-n-duck rig, but you start at the top of the hole and back bounce to the bottom of the run. You can get a lot of fish this way.

PLUGGING: You can plug a lot of different ways. By casting Thunder Sticks and Rapalas, or start at the top of the hole and work your way back. Regardless if you put that plug in their face they are going to smack it!

And this month it’s the kickoff of hunting season! We are offering guided goose and duck hunts!!! And our Southern Ohio Monster Buck Hunts in Southern Ohio we hunt on 13,000 acres of private land and we only have limited number of spots available. Call now and book your trip out in the field or a guided fishing trip!
