Gulf of Nicoya Fishing Report and Forecast for September and October

The fishing has been variable recently. The rains have put a lot of debris in the water and with good trash lines come chances at mahi mahi. We have been getting smaller ones up to 6 kilos. The rooster bite has slowed some as there is still little bait available around the rocks. The jacks and sierra mackerels have been around for some fun fishing on the jig or popper. We have had some descent sized cuberas come up on top waters without getting them to take.

September and October marks the start of the mahi mahi season. If the conditions continue as they are now we can expect large numbers of mahis ranging from 10-30 lbs to come in close and hang out in the debris in the currents off of Isla Tortuga and Tambor. Mackerels, jacks, snappers and groupers should be pouncing on baits and artificials as well. Roosterfish are usually plentiful in these months as bait should be readily available around all of the normal spots.
