Happening in the Month of May

May is National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcycles account for just 3% of all registered vehicles in the United States, yet motorcyclists account for 14% of all traffic fatalities. Looking at accident rates per vehicle mile travelled, NHTSA estimates motorcyclists are 30 times more likely than car passengers to die in a crash and five times more likely to be injured.  Many of those deaths could have been prevented if motorists were more mindful of safety.  For our cyclists, please make sure you have taken a Motorcycle Safety Course and for our motorists, please make sure you watch the roads closely.  Everyone please stay safe while traveling the roads each day.

May is also National BBQ Month.  The origins of American BBQ date back to colonial times, with the first recorded mention in 1672.  The core region for BBQ is the southeastern region of the United States.  BBQ is strongly associated with Southern cooking and culture due to its long history and evolution in the region.  As it has emerged through the years many distinct traditions have become prevalent in the United States.  While the wide variety of BBQ styles makes it difficult to break down into regions, there are four major styles commonly referenced: Carolina, Memphis, Kansas City and Texas.  There are hundreds of BBQ competitions across the region every year, from small local affairs to large festivals that draw from all over the region.  Our own Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo BBQ championship is one of the largest in the United States.  BBQ Month encourages you to take advantage of the sunny weather and to go outside and get cooking on the open grill.  So, take advantage of our great Texas weather and get cooking on those open grills and check out Wild Bill at www.texasselectseasonings.com for National award winning BBQ rubs and seasonings.
