Harkers Island Fishing Forecast June 2015

As June comes in the water temps are really getting just right finally into the mid to upper 70’s and the annual Cobia run has been in full swing now for a couple of weeks. The Spanish Mackerel and Nice sized Blue Fish are being caught in large numbers from Beaufort inlet along Shackleford Island to Cape Lookout and out to the Shoals, along with the Spanish the Atlantic Bonito (which is an actual Tuna and not to be mistaken for False Albacore) have been very abundant and are very tasty. These fish can be caught trolling spoons or casting small plugs such as Rapala X-Raps, MirrOLure MirroGlass plugs and the Salty Bay Baits Glass minnow. Those looking for the elusive Cobia need to cruise the local inshore beaches along Shackleford and Cape Lookout looking for the baits Balls(Menhaden) that these Cobia usually get around to feed on, this is mostly where you will find the Cobia other than Bottom fishing for them near the local Inlets of Beaufort and Barden’s.

As for the inside fishing in the sounds and local marsh areas of the Newport River and its Tributaries, Middle Marsh and North river Marsh to me the best fishing has been for Flounder with the Red Drum and Trout being somewhat scarce, although there are a few around the large schools haven’t been around as usual for this time of year. Speaking of Drum for those looking for Cobia they have been getting into some old drum around the Cape Shoals as they make their annual migration back into the Neuse River to spawn, these fish are ranging from 40-50LBS, and are lots of fun to catch. The local Spanish And Flounder fishing which is very popular in summer should continue to be good as the month of June moves on the Spanish will move into deeper/cooler water around 40ft. And the Flounder will be caught better in the early mornings and late afternoon to evening as they like the cooler parts of the day for feeding. For anyone looking for a fishing charter or family tour we still have dates available just give us a shout and please be safe on the water and show respect for other boats.

Have a great June fishing and enjoy, Capt. Noah Lynk.
