Kayak Report: February

kayak-report

The cold weather is still around but the fishing is good if you take your time and fish slow. On the colder of days we have been catching good trout, flounder and reds. I am fishing the Salt water assassin die dappers on a 1/8 oz. No Slack Tackle swim hook or a 1/4oz. pro elite jig head. We are finding deeper holes and slow bouncing the bottom. A slight twitch and retrieve is all you need. Let the die dapper sit for a few seconds and repeat. Paul brown originals and fat boys have been producing some healthy trout for me recently as well. You have to be very patient fishing these baits keeping all slack from your line but they are candy to mule trout!

When there are a few days of warm weather together start heading back toward the shallow flats in the afternoon. On the flats we are still getting great bites fishing MirrOlure top dog jrs, and Sebile stick shadds. Again slow and methodical is the key. I am doing a few hard walk the dog motions and letting it sit. This is has been when most of our hits come.

Tournaments will be kicking back in next month so take this time to get your gear and kayak organized and ready. To keep up with upcoming events we keep a running tab on what’s going on in the kayak community on our Facebook page Kayak Fishing U.

Always dress for the water temperature and not the air. One wrong move could spell disaster if you aren’t prepared. Remember while fishing from a kayak to always think safety. We are low to the water and not always easily seen. Keep a 360 degree light on at dark and low light conditions, wear a PFD, keep hydrated, and let someone know your float plan.
