Key West Fishing – June 2017

by Capt. Mike Weinhofer

June is the height of our early summer fishing. This year with the cooler than unusual water temperatures it seems as if the fishery is a month behind. When April came and there was no Tailing sailfish and really not much of a sailfish run at all, we were still catching tunas.

Early May we had a great Sailfish run and now as we approach June I guess we are going to start seeing the big dolphin showing up late. It is setting up to be a great year offshore. Season is just running a month behind, the fish don’t care they don’t have calendars. The normal Tarpon migration ran late also, normally they fill the inner harbors in late march early April and they didn’t show up thick till the first two weeks of May. The fishery is ever changing and we just need to follow the water temperatures to follow the fish.

This year in June we will see the big dolphin push thru in the 650-800 foot depth. The tarpon will be in full swing. The gulf wrecks will hold cobia longer than normal due to the cool temps. It also wouldn’t surprise me to see the mutton spawn delayed as well. The new and full moon in June may be the spawn this year.

All in all we have great fishing to look forward to in June. So make sure you make time to fish this June it is going to be unlike one we have seen in the recent past.
