Key West Fishing – March 2017

Well winter is in full swing and the fish are feeling the effect of the cooler waters, but the March spring winds will begin to warm the waters with the predominant southeast wind. The warmer water will start the migration of big dolphin and early sailfish.

The dolphin will setup in the 350-750 foot depth and big dolphin will tail thru in the mid day sun. Look for the frigates to show you where the big dolphin are and remember they are swimming west, sometimes at high rates of speed. It often looks like the frigate is just flying west looking but often there is a big dolphin surfing west. The sailfish will be coming thru in 120-250 feet of water feeding their way west. The grouper and snapper will begin to shift to the deeper water just off the reef edge in 90-140 feet of water following the bait. The gulf fishery will continue to have nice size cobia and snapper on the wrecks. The back country will probably change the most if we have a warm spring the tarpon permit and bonefish will return to the flats with a vengeance. The spring is my favorite time of year for fishing in the keys. It is spring and the fishing springs back to life with the summer fisheries. Watch out for those late year cold front they come thru in a flash and can bring high winds.
