Lake Hartwell Fishing Forecast August 2020

By Preston Harden

Water level-full pool
Water temp.-86

Summer has arrived. After a wet and cool spring the heat has arrived. The fishing does not slow down. It gets hotter. The fish move deeper to cooler water. Hybrids and stripers migrate toward the lower lake. They are looking for cold oxygenated water from mid to lower lake. Good electronics are important to locate the schools of fish in the deep water. It is mostly hunting until you get on top of the school. A lively herring is hard to beat. Big spoons and swim baits on a 1 oz. Jig head also catch them.

Bass also move to deeper water. Look for bass around bush piles put out by other anglers. You can make your own and have fish around it with indays. Good places to look are around long points and humps. Look from 15 to 30 feet deep. The spots rule the lower lake. As the water gets hotter, the spots school up like the hybrids and stripers. They are very aggressive and are easy to catch. They fight well and are good to eat. The afternoons can be better than morning, as the dam releases are usually in the afternoons. When water is generated, it makes the fish more active. Be watchful of afternoon thunderstorms
