From the Locks to the Rocks: Sept. 2014

[dropcap]S[/dropcap]eptember is a great time of the year. The water begins to cool and the fish will become a little more active in the daytime. The bite at night will remain strong. For bait, try cut eels and live minnows, as well as live bream, using a Carolina rig set-up with a cork on the leader line to the hook. The fish should bite better late evenings and through the night. Start looking for deep holes, as the fish will still be in the cooler, deeper water.

Crappie fishing should still be great, with bigger fish being caught on minnows and jigs this month. Look for brush piles and downed trees in the river to fish around, unless the river is up and you can get in the back of the creeks. Bream fishing should still be good on live bait such as crickets, red worms, wax worms, etc. Also, the beetle spin action should get hot. Watch out for structure sticking out of the river such as trees, bridge pilings, rubbish, etc. Bream like to hang around those areas!

Largemouth bass fishing should be good this month on jumbo minnows, soft plastics and crank baits. Small bass love night crawlers, so if you have kids, this is good month to bass fish this part of the river with them. Also start throwing your topwater baits, buzz baits, and spooks, as they will work well this month.
Take a kid fishing!
