Manistee Fishing Report: May 2014

T he weather has been very unpredictable this spring. I think the salmon are going to show up later because of the cooler weather. We have been catching some decent brown trout. The locals have always said, a hard winter makes the brown trout fishing good and so far it’s been good, better than last year. Hopefully the brown trout fishing will remain good as we wait for the salmon to show up.

The browns I have been catching have been on Dream Weaver Super Slim UV Spoons, Rapalas, and black, silver or natural colored baits, but with the hard rain we have had it could change with the dirty water.

As the water warms up, lake trout should be showing up too. I have picked up a few steelhead, but mostly brown trout this time of the year. The biggest one was about 10 pounds, but I have heard of a 16 pound brown trout being caught. Until the weather warms up, we will be concentrating on brown trout fishing and possibly some walleye fishing around the pier heads. Good luck.
