Manistee River: June 2014

manistee-river-fishing-report

As June begins, we are chasing bug hatches and streamer fishing with fly gear, and casting Rapalas and spinners with spinning gear for trout. Water temperatures are still a little low and most of the rivers are still up from the unusually cool and wet spring we had this year. This delays the bug hatches, but will prolong better trout fishing.

There is a lot of good fishing on the Manistee River in June. Trout fishing is at its peak and smallmouth bass and pike fishing are just starting to heat up. There are great opportunities on all of the rivers, lakes, and streams this month. Anglers can fish for anything from trout, smallmouth bass, pike, and bluegill on fly gear or spinning tackle.

The Manistee River above and below Tippy Dam will fish well all month for trout and the smallmouth fishing will pick up as the month comes to an end. Tippy is a great place to take the kids to get them started fishing because of the number of fish that are planted each year. It will keep them busy and having a good time whether it be with fly gear or light spin tackle. The smallmouth fishing on Tippy pond is definitely a place for the bass angler to enjoy with miles and miles of shore lines to fish. There are also great opportunities for pike and pan fish.

The Manistee River below Hodenpyle Dam has been giving up some very respectable trout this year. It is a place to find a trophy fish. Fish the upper stretches for trout and the mid to lower sections for smallmouth and pike. Practice catch and release on our trout so that you and your children have a chance at a fish of a life time. By keeping a trophy size trout you don’t give a mature fish a chance to spawn and they are the important ones we need around. Have a great June, enjoy what we have, and tight lines!
