You have to be on the water early to beat the heat and afternoon thunderstorms in July. Tarpon will be in the green water off the beaches all along the Treasure Coast. Run the beach at first light north or south and look for rolling fish. Take a wide berth around other boats working the tarpon and set up ahead of the fish and wait your turn for the fish to move into your casting range. Tempers will erupt if you bump somebody out of position if they were there before you. Greenies and pilchards have been off the beach from the House of Refuge up to the black condos. It is not uncommon to catch a big kingfish in shallow while tarpon fishing. Presence of bait is the key factor. Snook action at the inlets will remain strong on the tide changes. Treat the snook with TLC during the breeding cycle. These snook are trying to keep their immune system at top notch to ward off the pollutants that are in the water from Lake “O” discharges. The Indian River has a good trout and redfish bite going on right now. Top water plugs at first light are your best bet. In the heat of summer, trout and reds will be under the mangroves and docks so try skipping D.O.A. Shrimp into the cool shadows. There is plenty of fish action this month to be had so go out and get them…and don’t forget to wear your Bullfrog.
