In Martin County and surrounding waters, fishing is getting ready to get red hot. Spring is right around the corner, and that means great fishing action, whether you like light tackle fishing close to shore, desire to chase a blue marlin or target some big yellowfin tuna.

Within a couple of miles of the beach we have great fishing for permit, cobia and giant jack crevalle. These fish can be caught on fly rod, light spin tackle or heavy conventional tackle; take your pick. Try fishing live sand dollar size crabs, live bait, or jigs for each of these species. All put up a tremendous fight, and you have the opportunity to catch fish in excess of 50 pounds. Cobia would be the species that falls into this weight category; the permit and jacks range from 15 to 35 pounds. The unique part about this fishing is it is all sight fishing, so bring your casting skills and challenge yourself to some great spring light tackle fishing.

On the offshore scene, bottom fishing remains strong through April, but grouper and some snapper species still are in a closed season. Dolphin start to make a strong spring showing, and trolling ballyhoo or small lures works best. Fishing around current edges or weed lines prove to be the best areas to target. Best depths will typically be between 75 and 300 feet of water for these tasty acrobatic fish. When targeting the dolphin during the spring, I recommend pulling a big bait or lure on a 50 pound outfit. Blue marlin make a showing during the spring, feeding on the smaller of the dolphin in the migrating schools.

Stuart is the closest inlet on Florida’s East Coast for some amazing yellowfin tuna fishing. This fishing occurs on the east side of the Gulf Stream as close as 60 miles from the inlet. You can expect to catch limits of yellowfin tuna in April, with fish averaging around 40 pounds, and some fish exceeding 100 pounds. During this exciting fishing for tuna we commonly encounter big dolphin, with 25 to 50 pound fish common. When fishing around these tuna schools you can also expect to cross paths with some nice sized blue marlin. Last year we averaged two billfish bites a trip, and our biggest blue marlin that we released was around 500 pounds.

Spring is almost here and so is some great fishing. Come and get in on some red hot action!
