Martin County Offshore Fishing Forecast – January 2013

Stuart fishing really starts to heat up in January as the temperatures continue to drop. Although grouper season closed on January 1, fishing for them remains excellent for the next five to six months. Unfortunately it is catch and release only until May 1, so carry a venting tool and use circle hooks when targeting these fish. If you don’t want to catch grouper but love bottom action, hit your favorite spots but don’t drop your baits all the way to the bottom. This will allow you to target species like cobia and amberjack without risking injury to grouper during the closed season.

Cobia start to arrive off Martin County waters in big numbers during January. With favorable weather and wind out of the western quadrant you can expect great sight fishing for cobia along the beaches. Offshore, we find large amounts of cobia migrating south with giant manta rays. This provides anglers another great opportunity to sightcast at these exciting gamefish.

World class fishing for sailfish continues in the lucrative waters east of the St. Lucie Inlet. Preferred methods for targeting these sportfish are trolling circle hook rigged ballyhoo staggered around teasers called dredges, which represent schools of baitfish. Along with the great sailfishing, Stuart offers excellent fishing in January for dolphin, blackfin tuna and wahoo.
