Martin County Offshore Fishing Forecast – March 2012

If you’re fishing out of Stuart, Florida, in March you can expect some great sailfish action to continue from the earlier winter months. As the final cold fronts push through, sails tail to the south, eating everything in their path, from circle hook trolled ballyhoo, to a variety of live baits fished from kites. The sailfish don’t migrate alone, so you can expect some great dolphin action in March; catching 15 to 20 mahi-mahi a day is not uncommon. Most fish range in weight from 8 to 15 pounds. Trolled ballyhoo, small lures and live bait work best. Fishing around birds, scattered grass and color changes works best for these late winter mahi.

The fish that are just arriving and coming to stay for 3 to 4 months are the ever tasty cobia. These fish first arrive with schools of giant manta rays, where you can sight fish them with jigs or live bait; when the rays push back north, cobia stay on the great natural and artificial reefs that Stuart provides. Blind jigging, sight fishing and live baiting on the bottom are the best methods for these fish that range from 15 to 75 pounds, and are excellent table fare.
