It’s not over until the 130 doesn’t sing. As luck would have it, those bluefin’s stayed close enough to prompt a few more trips mid-November out of Chatham when the weather permitted. Typically not something that everyone would venture out for but with the rewards oh so sweet when it all comes together, who can resist?
Now that December is in our midst, there isn’t much more to say than that the 2014 salt-water slam is a wrap. The boats are all winterized, wrapped and lined up in the yard like stockings on the mantle. Our gear is washed and tuned up, awaiting an early arrival of spring. All in all, it was a good season despite its challenges. Yes it could have been better and yes there are the coming changes in the regulations that will have a few screaming in frustration. However, try to stay optimistic and make the most of what the season brings.
Those of you that can’t wait for the ice, fear not, it will be here soon enough. The plans are to hit the ice early and continue until the extension ladder is too short to reach the melting ice. After all, with the 5 pound bass monster browns we saw last year, we are counting the days to a state record.
If you are similar to many others, your thoughts may have already turned to the woods for the hunting season. Just like that 50 pound striper that got away, you might be tracking that big buck from last year that somehow eluded you time after time. Heartbreak is heartbreak; no different on land than at sea but when it’s all said and done, it’s not always the final victory that matters, but rather the road that we take to get there and the friends we take along the way.
Giving thanks to all of our friends for making 2014 one of the best years yet.
