Muskegon Fishing Report: August 2016

Well, there are still some big kings in the Lake! Out of the Port of Muskegon lake trout and steelhead have been our saving grace in June and July this summer, but there are some nice kings that are showing up. Our girl’s team for the Muskegon Lumbertown Challenge boated a 24-pound king that took big fish over all of the entire tournament on July 8th then on a charter that same afternoon we boated another one that weighed in at over 26 pounds. The water seems to be setting up well, and we should see some nice thermoclines in August. Once the thermoclines are set up, I believe the kings will also show up in decent numbers, not the huge numbers like the past, but they will be around. This is a great time to get out your Big Weenie Brand meat rigs and let them ride for those good kings. While pulling the meat rigs for kings, we also target steelhead with our lead core and copper long lines as well dredge the bottom for lake trout with directional divers, flashers and spin n’ Glo’s. This program gives our customers the best possible chance to put fish in the cooler. If you are sick of the doom and gloom reports, give this program a try and target a mixed bag. Our lake is changing, and the big numbers of kings may be a thing of the past, but we still have a great fishery on Lake Michigan, if people are willing to change their approach and expectations they can still have a great outing on Lake Michigan. It is the time people get into the mindset that they don’t have to “limit out” on every trip. Think of it like this, you don’t kill a big buck every time you go deer hunting, it’s about the hunt.
