Muskegon & Ludington Fishing Report: August 2013

MUSKEGON LAKE

Fishing has been good the last half of July. We have been fishing midday and the bite has been strong. Crawler harnesses are still the preferred, trolling the weed edges and drop offs. We are seeing best action in the 8-15 feet of water. We have concentrated in the Green Creek area, which is producing some walleye, largemouth bass, and pike. Also picking up are white perch, cats, and sheepshead.

Trolling speed has been 1.2 but with planner boards I have been running at 1.5. No particular color has been better than others, they all have worked. Just need a little flash and the right speed. Keep watch on your electronics and have faith in them.

August bite should be even better. With the hot part of the summer in full swing, the pike and bass should become very active. Look for top water action if this is your preferred style but trolling crawler harness will help locate the fish quick.

We will continue to troll the weed edge in hopes of triggering the walleye bite.

WHITE LAKE

Best action has been in the Indian bay, working the drop offs. We have been running Northern Tackle crawler harnesses which have been very affective. Starting to see a few smallies but mostly largemouth and pike.

HAMLIN LAKE

Best action has been in the bayous of the lower Hamlin Lake. We have seen most action trolling at 15-20 in 80-90 feet of water. We have also had success targeting the weed edges for pike and picking of the usual bass.

SILVER LAKE

We have been running just off the bottom to pick off the walleye. Again crawler harness the lure of choice. This method of trolling allows us to cover a lot of water and helps quickly identify the depth there hitting at. I stagger the multiple rod set ups to various depths in order to lock in the right strike zone. I will run up to 12 rods. Lately we have been running close to 19 foot, just off the bottom to trigger the bite. I have been using 10 pound test on 8 foot 6 inch rods and Okuma Catalina line counter bait casting reels.
