N.C. Striper Season Closed in Some Areas

Recreational striped bass season was closed in all of North Carolina’s coastal rivers, creeks and sounds on the first of May. Commercial striped bass season closed at the same time in the Albemarle Sound Management Area.

The closures include waters managed jointly by the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries and the Wildlife Resources Commission (joint waters). The recreational striped bass season in internal joint and coastal waters and the commercial season in the Albemarle Sound Management Area will reopen Oct. 1.

The Albemarle Sound Management Area includes the Albemarle Sound and all of its coastal, joint and inland water tributaries (except for the Roanoke, Middle, Eastmost and Cashie rivers), Currituck, Roanoke and Croatan sounds and all their joint and inland water tributaries, including Oregon Inlet, north of a line from Roanoke Marshes Point across to the north point of Eagle Nest Bay in Dare county.

Commercial harvest in the Central Southern Management Area remains closed. This area includes all internal coastal, joint and contiguous inland waters of North Carolina south of the Albemarle Sound Management Area.

The recreational striped bass season remains open in state waters of the Atlantic Ocean out to three miles. Commercial harvest in state waters of the Atlantic Ocean is closed.

Federal regulations prohibit possession of striped bass in the Exclusive Economic Zone between 3 and 200 miles.

State regulations prohibit possession of striped bass in coastal and joint waters of the Cape Fear River and its tributaries.
