Upper Pere Marquette River Fishing Report: March 2014

Winter is still holding on up here on the Pere Marquette. Many sections of the Pere Marquette River are frozen solid. As I’m writing this, I have been out in a few areas fishing and guiding, but there aren’t too many options with all the ice. If we see warmer weather soon, this watershed could turn into a real mess. With ice jams and high water hitting the area. So be safe if you plan on heading out and if you plan on floating the river, make sure the section is passable before you attempt it.

The steelhead are still holding in there winter pools and runs. Look for this to change as the water starts to warm. These fish will start targeting smaller pools and pockets around spawning gravel areas. For flies, try a handful of different egg flies; go small and natural if the water is cold and clear. Bring it up a notch if the water is high and stained, fishing with bigger and brighter egg flies. Nymphs will start working well as temperatures warm.

Try Hex’s and Stones in a variety of sizes, depending once again on water levels. Parr and smolt patterns along with leeches will start to fish well again on the swing. Good luck and be safe! Remember, please practice catch and release.
