New Hampshire State Record: Bluefin Tuna

A week ago Saturday, the crew of Salt Shaker, out of the Wentworth Marina in New Castle, landed an all time New Hampshire state record Bluefin tuna.

The current record was set in 2001 out of the same marina by Paul Wentworth Jr. , with a weight of 865lbs, and a length of 114″.

Their catch was 964 lbs., with no entrails, and a length of 119″ and the battle with this beast lasted about 3 1/2 hours.

When they returned to the dock there were over a hundred people there to witness the weighing in at the scales. Garth Morin and the rest of the grew are currently waiting a return call from NH Fish and Game, to record the new state record.

The boat owner is Capt. Rick Green and has as Capt. Garth Morin and Bruce Delleciea is his first mate.

They were using Herring for chum on 130 Shimano Tiagra reels with 150lb. test Seguar Fluorocarbons Leader. They were fishing Jeffries Ledge off the coast of NH in 200′ of water.

We fought through some large Blue Sharks and Dog Fish, but eventually saw the Thousand pound Tuna eating chum in our slick. The fish swam around the boat for 15 minutes or so before we finally tricked it with a hook bait. The fish ate the bait and proceeded to run off about 500 yards of line. The fight lasted about three hours before the fish made one final long run towards the bottom and died. We winched it up from 350′ and 45 minutes later it came up head first with a mouth full of Herring floating in his throat.
