No Boat? What’s an Angler to Do?

no boat

For those of us who live in West Michigan, we have many options and many different bodies of water to fish. However, if you don’t own a boat or have a friend who owns a boat, or have already taken your guided trip for the season it makes it hard to fish the great rivers and lakes in our area. What’s an angler to do?

If you’re looking for a way to access one of the best and most diverse rivers in Michigan and don’t own a boat, look to the Muskegon River and Wisner Rents Canoes. In the business since 1969, Wisner’s is well known in the area for offering groups and families canoe, raft, tube and kayak trips on the beautiful big Muskegon. Lucky for us anglers who don’t own boats they also rent excellent river drift boats and river boats.

I recently used one of their three-person river drift boats with a friend of mine for a day on the Muskegon. The boat was fully equipped with oars, PFDs, two anchors, and plenty of storage areas. Wisner’s staff was very accommodating and provided everything we needed to boat safely on the river. One of the things that makes this river great is its many choices of start locations. Your start location depends on your desired trip time and the areas you want to fish. Wisner’s staff will drive you to your launch point and pick you up at the many designated stop points down river.

On this beautiful fall day, we were ready and equipped to catch some fish. We chose to float from Thornapple access point down to Newaygo. This is about a six-hour float with anchor time, depending, of course, on how well you know the river. (Another great float trip, if you have the whole day, is to float from Croton Dam to Newaygo.) This will give you access to great trout, steelhead, walleye, and smallmouth locations.

We did happen to spot a couple of salmon while we were scouting and looking for signs of early salmon runs but had no luck in catching any of these migratory fish. But in the process we were still able to boat double-digit smallmouth. It’s such a testament to the diversity of the river and another reason to seek out the Muskegon and Wisner Rents Canoes boat rentals for your floating needs. This fall plan a day of fishing with your buddies and catch the great migratory runs on the Muskegon River. If you don’t own a boat, look to rent for the day. You won’t find an easier way to get on the river and chase the abundant species the Muskegon River has to offer. Wisner  Rents Canoes is located in downtown Newaygo right on the Muskegon River.
