The passage of several strong cold fronts in early November has lowered the off shore water temperatures to the mid 70s and has triggered an off shore free-for-all. The great sailfish action we saw by mid-November should get even better as we move into December, the peak months for sails. Some big blackfin tuna were caught in November along the Treasure Coast and I would expect that action to continue. Most of the sailfish and blackfin have been caught between 120 and 160 feet of water trolling live bait when available and naked ballyhoo when not. Look for the wahoo to show in increasing numbers this month. A wise man would troll a Yo-Zuri Bonito or a Rapala Magnum 30 rigged with a short cable leader in the prop wash.
The dolphin bite will likely slow as the water temperatures continue to drop. Big grouper, snapper and amberjack will be easy finds on the reefs and ledges. Vertical jigging, bucktails, live bait and squid should entice some action. Don’t ignore the opportunity for some big doormat flounder on the offshore reefs. Look for the prevalent schools of finger mullet on the way out of the inlet and take a few minutes to throw a cast net and fill your live well.
Pay close attention to the conditions in the inlet particularly this time of the year. A strong east wind and an outgoing tide can make for a dangerous situation. Know your limitations when navigating the Sebastian Inlet. Be safe and catch em’ up!
