The Arctic Blast of 2014 looks to be behind us, at least for now. The single digit temperatures really made a mess of the Pere Marquette River. The ice has pretty much broken up in the upper parts and the lower sections still have a good amount of shelf ice. Way down towards the mouth the river is still really choked up with ice. With the river high as it is, I would say look for fishing to get better as it starts to drop. I have been out quite a bit with temperatures in the 30’s and its felt downright warm out compared to what we had. The bite has been on ando and will probably remain that way until warmer weather sets in for more than a day. Good day or badday it still was nice to see some sunshine and not have to chip ice out of the guides. Looks like we’re in for some much colder temps againin the next couple of weeks up here on the Pere Marquette, fishing will still remain hitor miss.

For flies, with the warmer temperatures, try some Stones, Hex’s, and even a few Parr patterns. For eggs, try bigger Clown Eggs in brighter colors, like the “Juicebox” Egg. For
streamers, the bigger, brighter, ashier bugs will hunt. Try bigger Leech Patterns with Copper ash, you can’t go wrong there. If you’re planning on doing any fishing on the
Pere Marquette soon, play it safe with the back roads, boat ramps, and even footpaths. They are as bad as a skating rink right now. One can easily get their vehicles stuck, or take a pretty bad fall right now just walking along the river’s edge. So be careful!
