Pere Marquette River Fishing Report

Happy New Year! The Pere Marquette River is dropping quickly. Last month we did see a few more steelhead move up into the river but for now the fish are scattered throughout the river system. For the winter angler, the key is to cover a lot of water.

The swing bite turned on a little. We found most fish wanted a smaller leech pattern in black or purple, when the water had some color. Olive sculpin patterns were the ticket, as the river is starting to clear. For eggs it has been more natural looking clown eggs and nukes. Cheese, chartreuse, apricot, and grapefruit were fishing well. Don’t be afraid to try some nymphs as the water temperatures cool. Hex’s, hare’s ears, and caddis can fish well in the winter months. Check out my Uplander Special Nymph. It works well in cold-water conditions. If interested in some winter steelhead fishing or instructional on swinging flies, spey casting or whatever else you might want to learn. I do have some open dates after the New Year and will be offering half day trips throughout the winter months. Remember beads are not flies and keep them out of the Flies Only Section.

The challenge is on for the winter angler with the reduced number of fish in all our rivers. Good luck and for up-to-date weekly reports check out outfittersnorth.com
