Pere Marquette River Fishing Report: June 2015

Pere Marquette

T rout season is upon us on the Pere Marquette River. This is one of my favorite times of year to be on the river. There is just something special about floating a trout stream in the evening fishing to rising trout. The river is in great shape. We finally received the rain we needed last month.

We are now fishing for trout in the evenings on dry flies. Sulphurs and gray drakes are starting to bring some nice brown’s, and rainbow’s to hand. If you have never experienced casting a dry fly to a feeding trout it is quite the rush. It’s not easy, like anything in life a lot of casting practice will give you that perfect presentation that then usually equals a reward. Look for a buffet of insects to come off the Pere Marquette River this month. Sulphurs, gray drakes, yellow stone flies and the famous hex fly towards the end of the month.

It’s a great time of year to be on the water; fishing pressure is low and the trout are looking up. Grab a fly rod and get out there. I would recommend a heavy six weight or even seven this time of year. Especially if you plan on fishing the hex hatch. A much heavier rod is needed not only to fight bigger fish but also to cast a much bigger fly in the dark. Other nighttime essential’s are a pair of clear glasses, just because the sun isn’t out doesn’t mean you shouldn’t protect your eyes. Bring along a good headlamp with extra batteries and lots of mosquito spray. You should always go with someone who knows the river well or if you are planning on going alone that someone know your exact location, just in case of an emergency. Be safe and have fun!
