Preventing Monofilament Line Twists

“This line is terrible! It keeps getting twisted!”

I can’t tell you how many times I have heard those lines. The fact is that monofilament line on spinning reels is going to get twisted no matter what you do. The line gets one twist for every wrap of line around the spool. If that line comes back off the front of the spool, then that one twist is removed with every wrap of line coming off the spool.

However, if the line comes off the reel as drag allows the spool to turn and the line comes off the side of the spool, then every turn of the spool creates one twist in the line. The
same applies for “bait runners” or any other devise that works by the spool turning instead of the line coming off the front. If you want lots of twist, then wind the handle as the drag is running out. Every crank of the handle is 4 to 6 twist depending on the gear ratio, plus any line the fish pulls off the reel at the same time.

Here are 3 things to help you: First, if you use Stren Invisabraid or any other braid, then the line absorbs and hinds most of the twist. Second, if you are on a boat you can remove the twist by removing all tackle and leaders from your reel and running the line out behind the boat as it is moving. You only need to run out about 100 feet of line. When you wind it in the twist will be washed away. Finally, if fishing from shore or any stationary location, keep a couple 2 ounce bass casting sinkers (teardrop shaped with a swivel top) in your arsenal. If your line gets twisted, remove all terminal tackle and leaders and cast your bass casting weight as far as you can. Wind your line in with the line pinched between your fingers. Make a couple of casts and the twist will be gone.
