Protecting Florida’s Fisheries By: Garrett Stuart

We have scientifically proven a successful route to protecting our fisheries while, at the same time, filtering water! My name is Garrett Stuart, but most folks know me as Captain Planet. I am a marine scientist helping to provide artificial habitats to our shorelines.

Long ago, we replaced mangroves with sea walls and canal We are now seeing the effects of a loss of not only habitat, but a loss of a significant water filter as well. As a scientist who specializes in algae, I’ll be honest with you–we don’t have an algae problem in the state of Florida, we have a nutrient pollution problem. Algae blooms are merely a symptom.

The Eco Preservation Project’s “artificial reefs” are actually more of an artificial mangrove ecosystem. They are designed to only go under docks, and no permits are necessary.

Each unit is universally proven to filter an average of over 30,000 gallons of water per day via the filter feeding life that will inhabit the artificial mini reef. They house an average of 300 fish and 200 crab per year.

The bait fish immediately move in as they are protected from bigger fish, so the bigger fish that we like on our hooks congregate around them. I have fishing charter captains in Anna Maria that tell me when their customers aren’t catching anything, they take them to docks where I have artificial reefs.

With the price of only $397 (does not include long distance installation) and the fact that no permits are needed, these artificial habitats put the ball in our court as citizens, and we can finally do something about our water crisis.

Hop over to www.ecopreservationproject.com to order the artificial mini reefs or ask any questions. I’m honored that St Pete Fishing Outfitters, Tampa Fishing Outfitters, and Tarpon Springs Fishing Outfitters are all providing locations to make donations. If you donate $25 or more, they give you a $25 gift certificate. You may also donate directly on www.ecopreservationproject.com if you would like to help but do not own a dock.
