April brings us some of the best weather of the year and is an amazing month to be on the water in South Florida. From peacock bass to sailfish, there is sure to be great fishing for anglers of all skill levels.
In freshwater, both peacock and largemouth bass will be chewing as they will be hungry after spawning. Our local canal and lake systems make it easy to get out and wet a line. Your best bet for both species will be live shiners, but artificials can provide more of a challenge. For the little ones, try using bread balls or small pieces of hot dogs on small panfish hooks to catch bluegill, bream and mayan cichlids. Be sure to use a bobber so the kiddos get a visual of the bite.
In saltwater, there will be all kinds of species to target. There will still be plenty of sailfish around, but April is all about the meat. Big blackfin tuna will be showing up in better numbers and some smoker kingfish will be caught. Don’t forget about dolphin as some of the biggest fish of the year will be caught this month. On the reefs, yellowtail snapper will be plentiful, especially at night. Chum and they will come! Grouper will be biting good too, but are still catch and release only until May 1st. There will be plenty of snook and tarpon action around the inlets and bridges too.
Get out there and catch something!
Keep reelin,
