Happy 2014 to all you Anglers! Let’s continue where 2013 finished, GREAT fishing. December yielded a nice mixed bag of species. Offshore, dolphin fishing has been better than expected. The wahoo bite has been solid for the guys who have been getting out early and targeting them. Black fin tuna have also been steady in December, so we might be able to pluck a few of those too. The hottest bite is going to be sailfish. They will be in large numbers throughout Southeast Florida this month. Get your kite gear ready and have some fun with them. It’s going to be blowing so make sure you get some high wind kites for this time period. Put a spread of goggle eye, blue runners or even mullet and you’ll have a ball with the sailfish, kingfish, and wahoo that will visit your spread during this month. You will have to pick your days when the wind has laid down a bit.
On the reefs will be great again for yellowtail snapper, cero and Spanish mackerel. Make sure to use a block of chum every half an hour or so. Many times people are wondering why they are not getting the tails like the next guy and it’s because they did not use nearly enough chum. The mackerel (cero, Spanish and king) should also visit your chum slick.
Another thing that is a lot of fun and should be starting any day now in South Florida is shrimping. Go and get your 18 foot extendable shrimp nets, and wait for the right conditions. Normally it’s after a real good blow, around the full moon. Miami usually holds the best shrimp, but you can also find great nights at Hillsboro Inlet. The piers will be getting their share of mackerel, bluefish, jacks, and pompano. We recommend Doc’s Goofy Jigs for the pompano; Gotcha’s and spoons for the mackerel and bluefish. If you need help making the rigs for ANY of these fish, please stop by and we’ll show you how.
