Ocean Springs Shore & Pier Report

The nights have cooled down a shade and rains have slowed. Its time to load up the tackle and go fishing. You don’t need a whole lot of things, a rod and reel (or two), some hooks, weights, a good cooler, a bucket (possibly with an aerator for live bait) and your all there. There are many days when you just don’t feel like fooling with a boat and all the hassles that come with it. On the Gulf Coast of Mississippi we got some fine fishing right off the docks, and you wont have to walk five miles from your car to get there. Now that the bull reds are moving in, life is just plain fun. Speckled Trout are working the sea walls, white trout are beginning to move in larger schools … aww the joys of fishing.

I’m Ron and I’m all about fishing.

This week fisherman caught a lot of big reds off the pier at Ocean Springs. Tuesday and Wednesday nights from 2 to 4 in the morning big bull reds have really been firing it up. Many of the reds are over 40 inches. Several of the fishermen had limited out on reds. Additionally, a couple of fisherman had caught some nice specks. All the fish had been caught on cut bait, either croakers or cut mullet. Fishing off a pier at 2 in the morning can be wonderful event. Everybody needs some quite time, what better place? I was told that fishing the mornings up until about 11 a.m. has also been pretty productive. Most of the fisherman I talked with had been on the pier nearly every night (or every chance they got). Bottom line is this: fisherman don’t come back to the same place night after night unless they are hammering good fish. The general condenses was that “It’s all about the tide” this time of year.

Fishing off the Biloxi Bridge seems to have slowed some what. I expect fishing off the Biloxi Bridge to improve shortly as fall moves in. Currently, Speckled trout are moving around the sea walls and other structures west of the Beau Rivage. Trout were hitting on live croakers and live shrimp. Some huge Black drums have been hitting good also, maybe they are not the best eating but still lots of fun to reel in. White trout seem to still be hit and miss. When you find white trout they seem to be in large numbers, always lots of fun.

To the fisherman I meet on the piers and bridges, I really appreciate the stories and pictures. Please feel free to show me what you caught. My articles and this magazine are for you- the coastal angler.
