Skinny Water Report By: Derick Burgos & Natalie Manrique

With the New Year upon us, there comes new opportunities to catch your coveted trophy fish–not to mention, the variety of species pushing into our warmer backcountry waters to add to your fish bucket list. We here at Pure Florida Watersports, feel that kayak fishing is a very quintessential way to access Tampa Bay’s waterways and extreme skinny winter low tides. Kayaking helps you gain better access to our coveted sport—fishing.

Redfish and snook are basking in the sun and stud trout are eating hard to survive the harsher climates. This pushes them inward to warmer waters, which often can be very shallow conditions.

Watch out for the deep cold snaps, because they will make the fish lethargic and unwilling to eat as easily. This is why the presentation of the lure or bait you’re throwing is very important. Making sure you get a strike will probably require a much slower cadence when using artificials. If you’re think your going slow, go slower! Winter is always the best time for artificials, according to Derick! Dock fishing is also a great option during the colder days because, not only do they provide structure and warmth, but you’ll get to see some beautiful homes along the way.

Good vibes and tight lines from your local family-owned kayak outfitters, Natalie & Derick of Pure Florida Watersports.
