South County Inshore and Freshwater: Dec. 2019

George from Michigan got into some tarpon action.

By Capt. Patrick Smith Contributing Writer

Here we go with the December forecast; this is always a fun month. Cold fronts are rolling in, water temperatures are falling, and lots of new characters are showing up. This is a great time to fish artificial and one of my favorites is a spoon. Silver or gold and heavy, that’s all I need. Bluefish, jacks, lady fish, and others will pile on; sometimes every cast and the best part is you don’t need a boat. It’s a great time to walk the beach and score some solid fish. Another great lure is the Doc’s Goofy Jig, it will catch many species like snook, reds, pompano, etc., where I prefer pink and white with a quill. Deep holes, cuts, and channels should be producing some tarpon, snook, black drum, and the occasional redfish.

Capt. Ken Hudson caught some solid peacocks.

In freshwater, the peacock and largemouth fishing will remain great and the sunshine bass action should be nonstop. Shiners, crankbaits, rattle traps, and any other lipped plug should produce lots of action. Good luck out there!

Mia with a nice clown knifefish.
