Early risers will have the advantage this month fishing the flats before the heat drives the fish to deeper water. Gator trout this month will be targeted using Zara Spooks, Skitterwalks and D.O.A. bait busters. Throw shallow and work the plug back out to deeper water, most of the blow ups will happen in skinny water. Clear water conditions and fishing pressure means to go stealth. Redfish have been on both sides of the river, under the mangroves on the east side and laying up in the shadows of docks on the west side. A D.O.A. #314 shrimp has been producing some nice reds. The tarpon fishing should pick up this month with fish hanging around Club Med to Coconut Point, Big Mud Creek and along the beaches and inlets. Sight fishing for tarpon on the roll makes it a little bit easier to throw a D.O.A. Terror Eyz in front, let the lure sink and you will feel the pickup. Sharp hooks and smooth drags are essential when tarpon fishing. The inlets will be stacked up with the summer spawn of snook so please handle with care and revive the fish quick. Watch the afternoon storms and wear your sunscreen.
