Tick-proof your boat. Are you for serious…?
Ok now that I have your attention. For those of us who don’t regularly fish from shore or those just getting into fishing here is an ounce of prevention for you.
This spring even before the boat splashed we decided to do some shore scouting in Nahant and Swampscott in preparation of fishing some new spots this summer. Just as you can imagine, the really fishy spots almost always involve a little hike through tall grass, leaves, over bushes, under branches and basic woody areas. Yup, you guessed it, we entered the tick zone. Sure enough, later that day we found not one, but two, that hitched a ride on our clothes back to the house. Lesson learned, or so we thought.
Now three weeks later and just back from a trip to the Cape Cod Canal fishing with some friends, and what did we find? Yup, you guessed it right again. Another tick that we must have picked up in the tall grass that lines the canal just before you hit the rocks. After a quick call I found out all fishing partners but one found ticks. The one that didn’t find ticks told us he uses tick repellent. Information that would have been useful before we went fishing.
So here it is ANGLER-2-ANGLER… “Always carry tick repellant, give your clothes and boots a quick spray before trudging to your next spot, and don’t forget to do a quick check when you get back.”
