Three Lantern Marine

By Three Lantern Marine Staff

The April Cod Season Opener was a blowout with northwest winds gusting over 20 mph. It wasn’t until the weekend when the fleet started to venture forth to start the season. Reports were consistent from the ground with a steady pick of fish. There were no jumbos to speak about, but plenty of fish. There was a good mix of haddock, cod and pollock. Definitely enough fish to put your tackle to the test and get your blood pumping.

Don’t let the recent Gulf of Maine regulation changes announcement from the NOAA get you down. Although they reduced the haddock catch limit to three fish at 21 inches, you can still take nine cod at 21 inches. Get out there and hit the ledges in 220 to 260 feet and clean up on early season cod. There is also great news about large schools of bait around the banks. It’s not only good for those hunting ground fish, but probably more important if you’re a part of the wicked crew tracking the northern migration of our beloved Bluefin. Bluefin season doesn’t start until June, but Gloucester is already in a buzz about the upcoming season.
