The 57’ Spencer Tranquilo, out of Marina Pez Vela in Quepos, Costa Rica, is easily one of the top sportfishing boats in Central America right now. Winners of the 2014 and 2015 Quepos Billfish Cup and 2013 and 2014 Presidential Challenge of Central America, these guys play for keeps. With a recent top 3 finish in the world renowned 2015 Bisbee’s Black and Blue Marlin Tournament in Cabo, Tranquilo won over $2.4 million dollars.

The traveling tournament team Tranquilo consists of the owner Ken Cofer, his wife Amanda, friends Robbie Hood and Michael Moretti, and his crew Captain Victor Julio Pizzaro, Mate Daniel Arrieta and guest mate DJ Dejarnette. Late in the month of September, this team set out on an epic 1900 mile journey from Quepos, Costa Rica to Cabo, Mexico. Along the way they ran into a fairly powerful tropical storm system and needed to dock up for a few days near Ixtapa, Mexico. But this journey would be well worth the time spent completing it. Once Tranquilo arrived to Cabo, they fished in three tournaments and won big!

The first tournament was the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament in which they won a daily jackpot worth $13,000! The next day was the Lil Bisbees Billfish Tournament where angler Michael Moretti caught a 399 lb black marlin, which ended up winning the team $460,000! Who knew that a 399 lb black marlin could be worth that much money?! Next up was the big one, the richest tournament in sport fishing, the Bisbee’s Black and Blue Marlin Tournament.

In total, 121 boats were participating in the Black and Blue tournament, all competing for what could be a $3.5 million dollar prize! On day one, Tranquilo was fishing in the same area as they had been for the past 3 days when Michael Moretti had yet another marlin hooked up! After battling this marlin to the boat, used a formula to determine the weight on the fish which was estimated to be around 325 lbs. They boated the marlin and headed to the weigh station where they found the fish weighed 327 lbs! This marlin won the crew a massive daily jackpot of $825,000!

As the tournament came to a close, Tranquilo ended up earning 3rd place out of the 121 boats in the competition! This was a life changing trip for members of the Tranquilo crew. Captain Victor Julio Pizzaro is going to now be able to help his daughter fulfill her dream of studying pharmacy.

Team Tranquilo is now on their way to El Salvador where they will compete in the 21st International El Salvador Billfish Tournament.

When Tranquilo is not on the go, fishing in tournaments all over Central America, they can be found at the docks of Marina Pez Vela in Quepos, Costa Rica. If you dream of fishing with this professional crew, you can! They have many different options for charter fishing from 2 and 3 day sea mount marlin fishing packages to full day inshore trips on their 33’ Panga “Chloe Frijole”. The Tranquilo crew is truly one of the most professional and well equipped outfits you could fish with in Costa Rica.
